Appeals Court okays union recognition in charter schools

(New Orleans – September 25) Louisiana’s charter schools must recognize and bargain with unions if that is the desire of teachers and school employees, according to a unanimous ruling by the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The September 21 ruling by a three-judge panel affirmed a decision by the National Labor Relations Board, asserting that the International High School of New Orleans violated the National Labor Relations Act when the group holding the school’s charter refused to recognize the school’s bargaining unit.

Member Picnic at Springfield Hospital Center

No matter how much rain there is, we know after the rain, there is sunshine. While this was true for Maryland weather, this was also true for workers at Springfield Hospital Center. On  Wednesday, September 19th, there was an all-day cookout that celebrated the employees at the facility.

President John Ripley addressed his membership at the annual meeting at the BCFPE headquarters in Towson, MD. He brought those in attendance up to date on the affairs of the union. Of particular note to members were union financial affairs and the union’s electoral activity.

Louisiana graded “F” on support for public education

Louisiana is one of more than 30 states to be graded “F” on our support for public education in a new report from the Network for Public Education and the Schott Foundation for Public Education.

“Grading the States: A Report Card on Our Nation’s Commitment to Public Schools,” tracks the growth of private, for-profit charter and voucher schools that divert funding from public schools.

The Organizing Coalition for Public Education in Maryland met at the Baltimore Teachers Union on Thursday September 13th. The meeting saw a number of invested partners from across the state come together in an effort to promote public education across the state.
