The January Newsletter

 

After last year’s contentious elections, January brought our new and old representatives together to begin their work on behalf of the Louisiana voters. Governor Edwards was sworn in at a ceremony on the steps of the Capitol on January 13th. On that same day the House and Senate convened an organizational session.

Members go to Annapolis for Lobby Night 2020

Members from the affiliated locals of AFT-Maryland made their way to Annapolis to lobby elected officials on public employee issues that are coming up in the 2020 Maryland legislative session. Lobby night is an annual event that allows the state federation to put members before legislators to make their voices heard.

BCFPE and the Polar Bear Plunge

Union leaders often make sacrifices. The sacrifice isn’t always wading into nearly freezing water, but that’s what Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees President John Ripley and his team did in the 2020 MSP Polar Bear Plunge. The BCFPE team raised money for the athletes who compete with Special Olympics Maryland.

Kirwan Fair Funding Press Conference with BTU and AFT-Maryland

Education advocates are gearing up for an intense battle during the legislative session over the state fully funding the Kirwan Commission’s recommendations. That fight kicked off in earnest for the legislative session in Baltimore. The Baltimore Teachers Union and AFT-Maryland were on hand to fight for Maryland’s public school children.
