Petition: Action Needed to Slow the Spread

Take action to reduce the spread of COVID-19 so we can return to school

Target: Governor Ron DeSantis

Florida's children must not return to school campuses until steps are taken to reduce the rate of community spread in Florida. The rate of infection is growing at an alarming rate yet little is being done to slow the spread and even less is being done to support safe return to our schools. We must demand our governor take all necessary steps to slow the infection rate in our state before our children return to brick and mortar schools.

Click here to sign the petition.

Send a Message to the School Board

On Tuesday at 5:00 P.M. the St. Martin School Board will hold a Special Board Meeting to consider the Superintendent's Reopening Plan. As teachers and support staff who work in these schools everyday, we want to see schools reopen as soon as possible, but we have serious concerns about the districts' ability to keep staff and students safe.

It's important for the Board to hear from educators like you before they make these life-or-death decisions.

Here's what you can do:

1. Call your board member. Click here to find the name and phone number for your Board member.

2. Send an email. Click here to send an email to the entire School Board.

3. Attend the meeting. If you feel that you can safely attend the Board meeting, then please join us on Tuesday afternoon so the Board can hear from us in person!

Safely Reopening America's Schools

The AFT’s flexible blueprint for imagining a new normal for public education, public health and our society

Until a vaccine is developed for COVID-19, each community is going to need support in charting a path to safely and responsibly reopen school buildings and other institutions crucial to the well-being and economic vitality of our communities.

The AFT’s detailed, science-based “Plan to Safely Reopen America’s Schools and Communities” features five core pillars based on the science as well as educator and healthcare expertise—not on politics or wishful thinking.

NTU Update - July 17, 2020

Reopening Update

We are aware that many districts are slowly releasing their return to school plans.  Given the size and blend of public, private and charter schools in Newark, we would expect it to take longer than the suburbs.  We are patiently waiting for the release and our subsequent review of Newark's finalized plan.  We have been in constant contact with the all stakeholders throughout the process and learning from the Summer School pilot program.

Enjoy your summer, safely.
